GSK Consumer Healthcare Joins Coalition to Combat the Sale of Stolen and Counterfeit Goods

GSK Consumer Healthcare Joins Buy Safe America Coalition in Effort to Bolster Transparency and Accountability on E-Commerce Platforms

Washington, DC – Today, the Buy Safe America Coalition, a diverse group of retailers, consumer groups, wholesaler-distributors, manufacturers, and law enforcement officials that support efforts to combat organized retail crime and protect consumers and communities from the sale of counterfeit and stolen goods, announced GSK Consumer Healthcare, a world-leading consumer healthcare business, as a new member.

“Consumer safety is of paramount importance to GSK Consumer Healthcare. The counterfeiting of healthcare products represents an unacceptable threat to consumers’ welfare,” said Dennis Curran, Chief Customer Officer. “Consumers should always feel confident that the items they purchase have not been tampered with or altered in any way.”

GSK’s portfolio includes a wide range of healthcare brands used by consumers nationwide for oral health, pain relief, respiratory and wellness. These medications and supplements, which play a vital role in promoting health and well-being, are commonly targeted by organized retail crime networks for their high resale value online.

“We look forward to working with the other members of the Buy Safe America Coalition to keep consumers safe from counterfeit and stolen health care products. With many buyers nationwide turning to online shopping, we must do more to keep our products safe in online marketplaces,” added Curran.

GSK Consumer Healthcare joins the coalition amid growing support across industry, consumer groups and policymakers to ensure there is accountability and transparency on third-party marketplaces. Last month, the INFORM Consumers Act was introduced by Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Christopher Coons (D-DE), and Thom Tillis (R-NC). Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Raphael Warnock (D-GA) recently signed on as co-sponsors of the legislation. The bill would modernize consumer protection laws and require online marketplaces to collect and verify basic business information from sellers, in addition to requiring high-volume sellers to provide contact information to consumers.
